Experience the Icelandic Fall on our “Highland Center” Tours

All of our “Highland Center” tours combine a selection of Adventure Packages, each day bringing a new set of uniquely Icelandic experiences and sensations. The longer the tour, the more that can be discovered and experienced.

The Highland Center itself is the only accommodation base in the Icelandic Highlands and is ideally located to allow some of Iceland’s the most unique and unspoiled natural locations to be comfortably reached.

A Highland Center tour takes you way off the beaten track and truly takes you in to a very real and raw Iceland, an Iceland that so many visitors fail to see. A Highland Center tour will give you access to awesome, remote places and provide you with exhilerating emotions to last a lifetime.

Day 1: Golden Circle > Highland Center

Your adventureous holiday begins when you meet your local guide at your pickup location. This can either be at Keflavik Airport or, more recommended, at your hotel in the South or in Reykjavik.  We will drive you through the very famous Golden Circle route that includes the National Park (and World Heritage Site) of Thingvellir, the Geysir hot springs area and the mightily impressive Gullfoss waterfall. From there we head towards deep remoteness, far away from civilitation, beneath the looming shadow of Hekla volcano, towards the interior Highlands, eventually reaching the Highland Center. Here you will settle in for the night and we will enjoy an Icelandic dinner, making plans for the next days as we dine.

Day 2: Landmannalaugar: Gentle Hiking and Exploring Jökulgil

We will meet over breakfast and discuss all aspects adnd possibilities of the day. Then we will pack and prepare to take our modified super jeeps(s) into the area of Landmannlaugar, sometimes known for being the “color pearl” of Iceland. The fall time is extraordinary in Landmannalaugar, dramatic weather often enhancing the landscapes with spectacular skyscapes/scudding shadows. Whilst being a most popular tourist destinations in the summer time (June, July, August), Landmannalaugar in the fall is much more challenging (and exciting!) to reach. Always a wilderness area, it is true wilderness in these late end-of-year months when visitor numbers diminish dramatically; only the intrepid can venture here then!

In Landmannalaugar we will explore the area, hike around the lava flow (with its active fumeroles) and swim in the natural, geothermally heated pool. Sometimes there is the possibilty to also travel into Jökulgil which is a very special canyon, only accessible in the fall when there is snow on the ground to protect the nature. We will need luck on our side for this but, if the opportunity offers itself, we will gain a very special, memorable moment.

Having explored Landmannalaugar we head back to the Highland Centre. Here there is well deserved time in the evening for just hanging out, reflecting on the day, reading a book or taking a relaxing sauna.

Day 3: Fatbiking with gentle hiking and a Super Jeep Safari

After breakfast, we prepare for our final adventure day. If weather allows, we will visit the Hekla volcanic area or Búðarháls, also having with us our fatbikes to enjoy in the rough Icelandic terrain. The fall is a most magical month to be in the Highlands, when the changing weather, the shortenting daylight hours and the fabulous landscapes and arctic flora are so invitingly enchanting. After spending a day out-and-about, absorbing and relishing the sights, fatbiking and hiking, we return to the Highland Center to pack for home. You will then be transported to your hotel in the South/Reykjavik.

Day 2: Fatbiking with hiking and a Super Jeep Safari

After breakfast, we prepare for our adventure day. If weather allows, we will visit the Hekla volcanic area, also having with us our fatbikes to enjoy in the rough Icelandic terrain. The fall is a most magical month to be in the Highlands, when the changing weather, the shortenting daylight hours and the fabulous landscapes and arctic flora are so invitingly enchanting. After spending a full day day out-and-about, absorbing and relishing the sights, fatbiking and hiking, we return to the Highland Center for our evening meal and then set to to packing for the next couple of days, an adventure that takes us deeper into the remote wilderness, overnighting in the very heart of it – so much of Iceland awaits!

Day 3: Overnight in the Wilderness

The excitement mounts! After breakfast we pack into the super jeep(s) for a big overland and overnight trip, through the isolated Icelandic Highlands, to Landmannalaugar & through the Langisjor region. We take a route that is only accessable by 4×4 super jeeps at this time of year; this makes it an extremely rare expedition, a chance to explore and wander/wonder in this undisturbed land.

In our “go-to-anywhere” modified 4×4 cars, we first visit Landmannalaugar, a spectacular geothermal area. The mountains here are orange (if they are as yet uncovered by snow!) Some mountians are blue and some are green; the geology is fascinating. Landmannalaugar is sometimes known as the “color pearl” of Iceland, such is the kaleidoscope of colours. We will stop for a quick dip in a natural heated geothermal pool before we take the 4×4 vehicle(s) to the deeper highlands of Fjallabak Niðra. We will go to Langisjor lake, and drive on the lake bench which is only do-able in the fall as the waterlevel drops in the cold weather, making it then possible to drive 20 km coastline without damaging the nature. On reaching the head of the lake, we have couple of extreme river crossings to make and then we arrive at the cosy, remote mountain hut Jökulheimar . Here we spend a very snug, warmth-wrapped night. Your guides will prepare a traditional Icelandic meal and after eating the night is used for story telling and scouting for sight of the Northern Lights. When the Lights show, here there is absolutely no light pollution to hinder their shooting and waving majesty, their green and pink displays.

Day 4: The Return to Civilisation

Waking up in Jökulheimar (meaning “Glacier World”), does certainly feel like wakening up in a very different world indeed. We will pack our bags and settle back into the super jeeps ready for more excitement. We will enjoy breathing in the pure highland air and begin a slow – possiby reluctant – meander back, down to civilisation.

On the return journey we take a different routing. We travel  through the beautiful Veiðivötn lake-studded area which is a volcanic system known for being created in the biggest single lava eruption in the earth’s history. Taking time to admire the nature, we have an interesting journey of around 2½ hours till we arrive back at Highland Center. From here we travel onwards to your accommodation in the South/Reykjavík.
