Day 1

The first day is spent by visiting the Unesco World Heritage Site of Þingvellir, the most historical significant site in all of Iceland, hosting the oldest Parliament in the world. This area is filled with evidence of tectonic activity, located on the borders of the North American and European plates, that are still slowly separating. From Þingvellir we continue to other parts of the Golden Circle route. Geysir, the now dormant father of all geysers, is visited, along with the still active Strokkur geyser. Then it’s on to Gullfoss, the “Golden waterfall”. On the way we add stops to sample the local cuisines and even can take an outdoor bath in one of the natural hot springs.

Day 2

The second day we leave civilization and turn into the remoteness of the Icelandic Highlands where you should not expect to meet anybody. On our superjeeps we visit the area we call “Fjallabak”, the “back of the mountains”. Just to mention few of the sceneries of the day; the beautiful canyons of the Markarfljót river, the lake Álftavatn and the desert of Mælifellsandur. Magnificent and wondrous, in any weather.

Day 3

The third day we visit Skaftafell in the Vatnajokull National Park, surrounded by glaciers, natural and native birch forest and black beaches. In Skaftafell we hike to the waterfall Svartifoss that derives its name “Black waterfall” from the beautifully hexagonal basalt stones that surround it. Moving on from Skaftafell, we pass the highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur, on our way to Jökulsárlón, the glacial lagoon located at the edge of an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, the biggest icecap in Iceland (and the third largest in the world). The glacial lagoon is filled with beautiful icebergs of different shape, sizes, textures and forms, floating around in cloudy turquoise blue water.

Day 4

The forth day is again spent entirely off the beaten track in the remoteness at Fjallabak. Our main destination is Landmannalaugar. Due to its high geothermal activity, Landmannalaugar offers amongst the most magnificent sceneries to be seen in Iceland with beautiful high geothermal colors, lava fields, mountains, glacial rivers and small geysirs. After a short hike through the lava field you can treat yourself with a nice bath in the naturally heated geothermal outdoor pool. On our way back we drive passed the roots of Hekla, one of the the most active volcanoes in Europe.

Instead heading to the inland again there is also the opportunity of driving the south shore back from Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Among the beautiful sights on that route would be the black beach at Reynisfjara, the “island” headland of Dyrhólaey and the waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Day 5

The last day is a relaxation day. We drive to the South West and the Reykjanes peninsula with its tectonic plates, volcanic activity and high geothermal areas. We visit the hot springs, the bird cliffs and the bridge between the continents where you actually walk on a bridge between North America and Europe. After the sightseeing you will enjoy some time in the Blue Lagoon before heading back to the airport or your hotel in Reykjavík area.
