LIKE NOTHING ELSE
Two days of mountain biking with local guides in the extraordinary nature of the Laki craters area. Crossing some unbridged rivers and through gravel roads, we slowly reach the Highlands where the Laki eruption took place in 1783-84, forming the second largest lava flow in Icelandic history. The craters form a 25 km long fissure counting 130 craters.
We bike passed craters, lava, black sands and magically thick, vivid green, moss, with a spectacular views over Vatnajökull icecap and glaciers with mountains all around. We explore some of the craters and hidden caves in the 230 year old lava and learn about their geological formation.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Laki – Blængur
We start the day with a nice jeep ride up to the highlands. Making few stops on the way we explore the massive canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur, the beautiful Fagrifoss (Beauty falls) and a highland farmstead deserted since 1953. Crossing some unabridged rivers and hard gravel roads we slowly reach the highland.
As we enter the Vatnajökull National Park we step up our game and step on our bikes! Passing truly magnificent landscapes of lava, thick moss fields, rootless cones and black sands. Besides riding our bikes we also stop few places and take a walk to stretch our legs, explore some craters and learn about their geological existance. In good weather we get a spectacular view over Skaftá river, Fögrufjöll mountains, Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers. When we finally reach our destination in the mountain hut in Blængur we will have a nice dinner waiting for us.
We spend the night sharing stories, exploring the surroundings in the midnight sun or simply relax after the busy day.
Blængur – Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Today we start the day with a rocky downhill and crossing unbridged river. Soon we arrive at one of Iceland´s hidden gem, the largest cave-system in Iceland, made by the eruption in Laki.
We take a break of biking and put our headlights on to explore the caves for an hour or so. After that we have a nice long downhill ride in the „land of moss“ until the end of the tour.
