Experience the Icelandic Winter on our “Highland Center” Tours

All of our “Highland Center” tours combine a selection of Adventure Packages, each day bringing a new set of uniquely Icelandic experiences and sensations. The longer the tour, the more that can be discovered and experienced.

The Highland Center itself is the only accommodation base in the Icelandic Highlands and is ideally located to allow some of Iceland’s the most unique and unspoiled natural locations to be comfortably reached.

A Highland Center tour takes you way off the beaten track and truly takes you in to a very real and raw Iceland, an Iceland that so many visitors fail to see. A Highland Center tour will give you access to awesome, remote places and provide you with exhilerating emotions to last a lifetime.

The Icelandic winter weather can be very extreme (all part of the great fun to be had!) but your professional, most capable local guides will make sure you feel completely safe and at ease at all times. Of course, should weather conditions become particularly severe, we always have alternative plans at the ready, never worry, never fear.

In addition to the tour itineraries outlined below, here are some possible extra inclusions to consider in order to make your tour completely bespoke and completely action packed:-

  • An overnight cross-country skiing trip, staying in a tent or in a remote hut
  • An overnight snowmobile trip, staying in a tent or in a remote hut
  • Self Drive Experience: learn how to drive on snow, in super jeeps
  • Survival Skills: Learn from our guides some special winter survival skills

Day 1: Golden Circle > Highland Center

Your adventurous holiday begins when you meet your local guide at your pickup location. This can either be at Keflavik Airport or, more recommended, at your hotel in the South or in Reykjavik.  We will drive you along the very impressive Golden Circle route that includes the National Park (and World Heritage Site) of Thingvellir, the Geysir hot springs area and the mightily impressive Gullfoss waterfall. From there we head towards deep remoteness, far away from civilisation, beneath the looming shadow of Hekla volcano, towards the interior Highlands, eventually reaching the Highland Center. Here you will settle in for the night and we will enjoy an Icelandic dinner, making plans for the next days as we dine.

Day 2: Activity Surprise Bundle:  Snowmobile Safari and Landmannalaugar

After breakfast at the Highland Center we prepare for our adventure day. If weather allows, we will visit the Landmannalaugar area. This area in the central southern highlands of Iceland is a most awesome destination. Being on top of the Mid Atlantic Ridge, you are in the midst of many volcanic features and forms.  We will also bring with us much activity equipmdent to allow us many options to suit your needs and the conditions of the day.  Items such as Fatbikes, snowshoes, cross-country skis will all be brought along. We will ensure that we incorporate several activities but, of course, all will be guided by the weather and ground conditions on the day. If the weather gets very extreme (only adding to the excitement!), we can also teach and practice survival skills (whilst in complete security).

When in Landmannalaugar we will make sure to take the oportunity to enjoy the naturally heated geothermal pool. It feels deliciously strange to be outdoors, in the winter, bathing in a luxuriously warm pool, surrounded by beautiful mountains, covered in snow, at the edge of a lava flow! Weird? Wonderful? Most definitely!

Returning to the warmth and comfort of the Highland Center, we feast on a traditional Icelandic meal.

Day 3: Fatbiking with hiking and a Super Jeep Safari

After breakfast, we prepare for our adventure day. If weather allows, we will visit either the Hekla volcanic area or Búðarháls, also having with us our fatbikes, icetools, snowmobiles to enjoy in the rough Icelandic terrain.

After spending roughly a ½ day out-and-about, we return to the Highland Center to pack and get transported to your hotel in the South/Reykjavík.

Day 3: Overnight in the Wilderness

The excitement mounts! After breakfast we pack into the super jeep(s) for a big overland and overnight trip, through the isolated Icelandic Highlands. We take a route that is only accessable by 4×4 super jeeps at this time of year; this makes it an extremely rare expedition, a chance to explore and wander/wonder in this undisturbed land. We will choose the location depending on the weather but most likely we will try to reach the Midgard Mountain Hut in Sprengisandur region.

After some extreme super jeep driving, we arrive at the cosy, remote Midgard Mountain Hut. Here we spend a very snug, warmth-wrapped night, despite there being no electricity or running water. We will strip our needs to the basics and your Guide will introduce you the special “up-in-the-mountains” lifestyle that Icelanders have developed, with many rich stories. Your guides will prepare a traditional Icelandic meal and after eating the rest of the night can be used for scouting for sight of the Northern Lights. When the Lights show, here there is absolutely no light pollution to hinder their shooting and waving majesty, their green and pink displays.

Day 4: The Return to Civilisation

Waking up in Midgard has a very special atmosphere/ambience. You instantly sense the remoteness of location, making you feel rather small and insignificanrt in the midst of such expansive nature.

This area is known for having some of the most extreme weather conditions in all of Iceland (definitely another advantage for adventure!) and so we build our plans for the day around the weather and ground conditions.

Taking time to admire the nature, we have an interesting journey of around 2½ hours till we arrive back at Highland Center. From here we travel onwards to your accommodation in the South/Reykjavík.
