THE LAVA TUNNEL (with transfer)

Experience one of the longest and most famous lava tubes in Iceland, the magnificent Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel.

A journey into this magnificent lava tunnel is a unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption. One walks in the path of lava that flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred about 5.200 years ago. Every winter spectacular ice sculptures are formed inside the entrance of the cave making the experience of visiting the lava tunnel even more breathtaking.

Inside the lava tunnel, paths and a footbridge have been ingeniously crafted to ensure ease of access, circumventing the challenge posed by the tunnel’s rocky terrain. Mesmerizing lighting accentuates the dynamic spectrum of colors, vividly illustrating the profound seismic forces that sculpted the tunnel.

The Lava Tunnel is located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík and is accessible all year round.

What’s included?

For who?

• For most people, although we do not recommend the tour to those with difficulty with balance, difficulty walking on an uneven surface (such as snow) or walking up or down steep stairs.

What do I need to bring?

• Warm clothes and sturdy shoes!

Additional information about the transfer:

• There is no guidance during the transfer
• The transfer is operated by a partner company called Reykjavík Excursions and the bus will be marked “Reykjavík Excurisons”. The sign on the bus will state “Tour Pick-up”.
• The pick-up takes place between 8:30-8:50 AM for the 9 AM tour or 12:30-12:50 PM for the 1 PM tour.
• Please be ready in front of your selected pick-up destination (your hotel, hostel or guesthouse in Reykjavík)
