1. Which Super Jeep Tour should I choose?
This is a hard one because they are all so different. Þórsmörk, Landmannalaugar, and Fjallabak are all unique, remote and stunning. We would recommend visiting all three, but if you need to choose between them, here are a few points to consider.
First, when are you traveling?
We operate tours to Þórsmörk all year long. However, we only operate tours to Fjallabak and Landmannalaugar during summer, from around June 20th until the end of September. Therefore, if you are traveling during late autumn, winter, or spring, Þórsmörk is your tour.
Here below we explain the difference between our three signature tours.
Þórsmörk: Icelander’s favorite happy place, playful landscape & mystical beauty.
Þórsmörk Super Jeep is our most popular tour and has been since we started in 2010. Þórsmörk holds a very special place in our hearts. This place has it all: volcanic landscapes, not just one but three glaciers, exciting glacier river crossings, and so much history (from folk, elves and trolls and all the way to Game of Thrones). The number of interesting places is abundant, both in Þórsmörk and on our way there.
The drive from Midgard to Þórsmörk takes 90 minutes, and we usually make one or two stops on the way. During the tour, we do short hikes; the guide always makes sure the length and pace fit everyone in the group.
Fjallabak: Ultimate wilderness, bright green mountains & black sand desert
Fjallabak Super Jeep is the most remote tour. You will be going deep into the Icelandic highlands, truly into the wild, where there will be barely any other travelers. This tour is about the journey, taking in the incredible sights while traveling in the comfort of the Super Jeep. Choose this tour if you want to pick the tour that goes most off-the-beaten path and you want to see: unique mountain shapes, deep canyons, vast black sand deserts, lava fields and bright green mossy mountains.
Fjallabak is a very large area and on every tour, we decide depending on condition which places we are going to visit.
Landmannalaugar: Otherworldly landscape, rhyolite colors & natural hot spring bath.
Landmannalaugar is a so-called bucket list place in North Fjallabak Mountain Reserve. It’s renowned for its vibrant, multicolored rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs. It’s a breathtaking area that offers a unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity, featuring lava fields, hot springs, and craters.
The drive from Midgard to Landmannalaugar takes 2-2 ½ hours. In Landmannalaugar, we usually do a hike, and afterward, guests are invited to take a dip in the famous hot spring.

2. Which Super Jeep tour is best for families with children?
We always recommend the Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour for families with children because there are many interesting stops on our way into Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) Mountain Reserve. By stopping frequently, the children are less likely to become restless. The drive to Þórsmörk from Midgard is 90 minutes, but we usually make 1 or 2 stops on our way. Where we stop depends on the guide, the group, and the weather/road conditions. The stops along the way include short, playful hikes – sometimes we explore a cave, other times a waterfall, sometimes we spot some troll faces in the mountain – there is always something to discover for the adults, but certainly also for the kids.
3. What is the difference between Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour and Þórsmörk Hike?
On the Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour, we do multiple stops with shorter hikes. The length of the hike depends on the group. The guide makes sure that the pace and length fit everyone in the group. On the Þórsmörk Hike Day Tour, there are fewer stops, and we do one hike which is around 8-10 km, or 3-4 hours.
4. Is there a minimum age requirement?
We love having children with us on tour. We have a minimum age of 5 years for all Super Jeep & Highland Tours. However, there is no minimum age for our private tours. All our small group tours are also available as private tours. For more information, please contact us here.
5. What is the maximum group size for your Super Jeep & Highlands day tours?
We have a maximum of 13 people per Super Jeep.
6. What type of cars are Super Jeeps?
Super Jeeps in Iceland are specially modified four-wheel-drive vehicles that are adapted to handle rugged and diverse terrains. These vehicles are equipped with oversized tires ranging from 38 to 50 inches, enhanced suspension systems, and snorkels for river crossings. These modifications allow them to traverse Iceland’s highlands, cross glacial rivers, and navigate volcanic landscapes, making them essential for accessing remote and challenging locations.
7. What type of cars are in the Midgard fleet?
Our fleet consists of Ford Excursions, Mercedes Benz Sprinters, Ford F250 Pickup, and Dodge 3500 Pickup.
8. What about lunch?

9. Which wildlife can I expect to see?
When exploring the Fjallabak, Þórsmörk, and Landmannalaugar areas, you can expect to encounter a diverse range of Icelandic wildlife. In these regions, you might see Arctic foxes, which are native to the area and adapt at surviving in Iceland’s harsh conditions. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of bird species, including the majestic gyrfalcon, golden plover, ptarmigans, and various species of geese and ducks that frequent the highlands and river valleys.
If you follow us on Instagram, you might have noticed that recently, we have been lucky to see Arctic foxes quite frequently in Þórsmörk (Thorsmork). There are quite a lot of Arctic foxes in Þórsmörk Mountain Reserve, but we want to emphasize that we can never guarantee an Arctic fox sighting as they roam the area freely.
10. I’m afraid that I will have trouble entering and exiting the car.
Don’t worry, we have a step stool to help guests get into the Super Jeeps. Our guides are also very experienced and will be happy to assist you with getting in and out of the jeep. We are very accustomed to helping guests maneuver around our vehicles, so you’ll be in good hands.
11. I´m not a confident hiker, can I still book?
Our guides will always make sure that the short hikes on our Super Jeep & Highland Tours are suitable for everyone in the group. You can even decide to stay in or around the Super Jeep if you prefer. There is no obligation to participate in the short hikes. The terrain can be gravel roads, grass, moss and rocks. The hikes can be on flat terrain and also uphill and downhill. We can provide hiking poles if requested in advance. If you would like to have hiking poles please email us to adventure@midgard.is.
