1. Which hiking tour should I choose?

First, when are you traveling?
We offer the Þórsmörk Hike Day Tour from May to October and the Fimmvörðuháls Hike Day Tour from late June to the beginning of September. If you are traveling outside of this period, we recommend you check out our Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour which we operate all year and also includes numerous shorter (but not less beautiful) hikes.

The second thing to consider is the length of your desired hike.
Our Þórsmörk hike is around 8-10 km or 3-4 hours. Fimmvörðuháls is a long and strenuous hike of 24 km and usually takes 8-12 hours in total. Which one would you prefer? Please note, this is the duration of the hike, not the duration of the whole tour.

Þórsmörk is our most popular hike. This hike is doable for anyone with a moderate fitness level. We don’t do the same hike every day. On each day, the guide chooses what path to take depending on the weather, road conditions, and the group. Þórsmörk Mountain Reserve is a lush valley nestled between three glaciers. It’s Iceland’s most beloved hiking destination, offering stunning views and rich natural beauty. You will hike through scenic trails, discover hidden waterfalls, and experience Þórsmörk’s uniqueness.

Fimmvörðuháls is more of a challenge. You hike from Skógar waterfall and end in Þórsmörk (Básar). It’s a trail renowned for its diverse landscapes, including volcanic craters formed during the 2010 eruption, magnificent waterfalls, and panoramic views of the surrounding highlands. This hike is a must for those seeking an exhilarating and rewarding experience.

2. What is the difference between Þórsmörk Hike and Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour?
On the Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour, we do multiple stops with shorter hikes. The length of the hikes depends on the group but the total length of hiking is usually around 3 km. The guide makes sure that the pace and length fit everyone in the group. On the Þórsmörk Hike Day Tour, there are fewer stops, and we do one hike which is around 8-10 km, or 3-4 hours of hiking.

3. Is there a minimum age requirement?
We have a minimum age of 13 years for both Þórsmörk Hike Day Tour and Fimmvörðuháls Hike Day Tour. However, we do make exceptions for children who are used to hiking. If you know that your child is capable of hiking the length mentioned in the tour description please send us an email to adventure@midgard.is and tell us about the children’s age and their prior hiking experience.

4. Do I get to experience driving in a Super Jeep on the Þórsmörk Hike Day Tour?
Yes, to get into Þórsmörk we use Super Jeeps.
Super Jeeps in Iceland are specially modified four-wheel-drive vehicles designed to tackle the country’s rugged and varied terrains. Outfitted with oversized tires (ranging from 38 to 50 inches), enhanced suspension systems, and snorkels for river crossings, these vehicles can traverse Iceland’s highlands, and ford glacial rivers, and navigate volcanic landscapes. These modifications make them indispensable for reaching remote and challenging areas.

5. What type of cars are in the Midgard fleet?
Our fleet consists of modified Ford Excursions, Mercedes Benz Sprinters, Ford F250 Pickup, and Dodge 3500 Pickup.

6. What about lunch?
During a day out in nature, you will definitely get hungry. We have you sorted: When you book, you can add a lunch box to your booking. The lunch box is from Midgard Restaurant. You can read more about it here.

7. Do I need hiking poles?
This is a personal preference. You can bring your own or we can lend you hiking poles. Please email us to adventure@midgard.is if you would like to borrow hiking poles from us.
