INSIDE THE VOLCANO | HELICOPTER TOUR

The dormant Þríhnúkagígur volcano is a unique natural phenomenon. By setting up the necessary gear and equipment, we’ve created a tour that opens the door to a new world.
Enter Þríhnúkagígur volcano and descend into the only accessible lava chamber on planet Earth. What awaits you down there is truly magnificent.

We offer helicopter tours to Þríhnúkagígur, which are ideal for those who aren’t interested in hiking to the roots of the volcano.

The helicopter departs from Reykjavík domestic airport (located close to the center of Reykjavík) and it’s possible to do the tour early in the morning, at 8:30, or in the afternoon. The time of the afternoon tour depends on the season.

Helicopter tour duration: About 2 hours in total (40 minutes inside the crater). Helicopter flight approximately 12-20 minutes each way.

If your desired date isn’t available on the booking site we recommend sending us an email to adventure@midgard.is. There are often more dates available than shown in the booking widget.

The name!
The volcano’s name Þríhnúkagígur, mostly unpronounceable for anyone other than locals, would be directly translated as ‘Three Peaks Crater’.

The only accessible lava chamber on Earth
Þríhnúkar is a safely dormant volcano that has erupted three times. The last eruption, which took place about 4,500 years ago, left behind a unique natural phenomena: Þríhnúkagígur. It is truly one of a kind and the only accessible lava chamber on Earth. Inside, the beautiful coloration and unique rock formations represent all the shades and shapes of the earth where its size is enormous and to some extent intimidating.

BOOK TODAY AND EXPERIENCE A JOURNEY TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

Please note

  • We operate form May 5th to October 31st every year
  • The tour takes about 5-6 hours including pick-up

Duration:

2 hours (about 40 minutes are spent inside the volcano).

Flexibility:

We try our best to be flexible and if the weather forecast is not looking promising at the time of your booked tour, we will:

Try to change the time on the same day (e.g. leave for the tour in the afternoon instead of the morning)
Offer you a different date (e.g. the day before or the day after)

If neither of these options is suitable, you could take the standard hiking tour (if available) or get a full refund.

What do I need to bring?

  • Good shoes – We recommend wearing hiking boots on the tour since the trail is rocky and can get wet and muddy on a rainy day.
  • Outdoor clothing. It’s always the same temperature inside the crater – about 3°C (37°F). That’s cold so we recommend wearing warm clothes.
  • A camera. You will want to remember this trip. Yes, you can take as many pictures as you want!
  • A good spirit. This tour is all about having fun.
