Katla ice cave from Reykjavík
Step inside a natural ice cave shaped by a moving glacier and the volcanic landscape beneath it. At Kötlujökull, an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, layers of blue ice and black volcanic ash create patterns that tell the story of ice, eruptions and constant change.
Your guide will pick you up at your chosen meeting point in Reykjavík and head east along Route 1. Before long, the paved road is left behind and the journey continues by modified Super Jeep through the rugged landscape towards the glacier.
What to expect
- Super Jeep journey: Travel off the main road and across rough terrain towards Kötlujökull.
- Gear provided: At the glacier, you’ll put on crampons and a helmet before continuing on foot.
- Short walk to the cave: The approach is suitable for guests with average fitness and is not particularly physically demanding.
- Changing access: Depending on conditions, reaching the entrance may involve climbing a few steps on a ladder.
- Inside the ice: See layers of glacial ice and volcanic ash up close, with formations that change as the glacier moves.
- Local insight: Your guide will share the story of Mýrdalsjökull, the ice cave and Katla, the powerful volcano beneath the glacier.
Why does the cave look like this?
Kötlujökull flows down from Mýrdalsjökull, beneath which lies Katla volcano. Over time, glacier movement and layers of volcanic ash have created the distinctive blue and black ice seen in this area.
Ice caves are natural and constantly evolving, so their shape, colours and access can change with the conditions. That is part of the experience. You are stepping into a landscape that is still being formed around you.
