Ice Cave Discovery
The Ice Cave Discovery is a full winter day on the glacier and one our guides are especially fond of. With a maximum of 9 guests, there is time to travel further, walk across the ice and explore parts of the glacier that take a little more effort to reach.
The day begins at Jökulsárlón, where you climb into a modified Super Jeep and head towards the glacier. The drive takes you through the glacial valley, across bridges and streams, before reaching the point where the journey continues on foot.
What does the day involve?
- Glacier hiking: Around 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking in total, crossing the glacier tongue and exploring its changing features along the way.
- An ice cave: The tour typically visits one natural ice cave, along with other interesting formations found on the glacier.
- Time to look around: There is no need to rush through. You’ll have time for photographs, exploration and a short lunch break.
- Small groups: A maximum of 9 guests keeps the experience personal and gives the guide more flexibility throughout the day.
Why are ice caves different every year?
Glaciers are always moving, melting and reshaping themselves. The caves we visit are natural formations and can change significantly over a winter season. They are typically around 30 to 100 metres long, although size is only part of what makes a cave worth visiting.
When scouting caves, the guides also look at the colours, formations, access and the overall experience inside. The cave you visit will therefore depend on the conditions at the time of your tour.
Ice caves are part of a shared natural landscape, so you may meet other groups during your visit. Your guide will make the most of the conditions and timing on the day while giving you plenty of opportunity to experience the glacier properly.
