Ice Cave Discovery

A full winter day on the glacier

This is the longer, more adventurous way to experience the ice caves of Vatnajökull. With a maximum of 8 guests per guide, you’ll travel by modified 4×4, visit a natural ice cave and continue further onto Breiðamerkurjökull for an extended glacier hike.

The glacier is always changing, so no two seasons are quite the same. The cave visited depends on current conditions, while the longer hike gives you time to explore the wider glacial landscape beyond the cave.

What to expect

  • Duration: Around 6 hours
  • Group size: Maximum 8 guests per guide
  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • 4×4 journey: Travel across rugged glacial terrain before continuing on foot
  • Ice cave visit: Explore one of the natural caves selected by the guides for the current season
  • Glacier hike: Continue further onto Breiðamerkurjökull, including some steeper sections
  • Time on the ice: Plenty of opportunity for photographs, exploration and a break for lunch or snacks

Which ice cave will you visit?

Ice caves are natural and constantly changing. Caves visited in previous seasons, including the Blue Diamond, Sapphire and Crystal ice caves, have since disappeared or become inaccessible.

At the beginning of each winter, guides scout the glacier to find the best locations for the season. Safety comes first, followed by access, ice formations, colour and the overall experience.

You may encounter other groups around the ice cave itself. Once you continue further onto the glacier, the experience becomes more about the scale, silence and changing landscape of Breiðamerkurjökull.

What should you bring?

  • Hiking boots with ankle support

Hiking boots can be rented on location for 1,500 ISK if needed.

  • All necessary glacier safety equipment
  • Modified 4×4 transport to the glacier
