The LAVA Centre is located in our town, Hvolsvöllur in South Iceland. It’s our favourite exhibition, we recommend it for all ages and even for that one family member that does not like museums at all! It’s fun, educational and surprising! It will give you insight that will make the rest of your trip more interesting!
It’s renowned for its exceptional design and technological innovation, the LAVA Centre serves as the ideal starting point for exploring the South Coast of Iceland, home to the most active volcanic region on the island.

Visitors to the LAVA Centre can explore the Iceland’s geological evolution, witnessing its rise as one of the world’s largest volcanic islands over millions of years, fueled by molten rock from the North Atlantic Ridge.
The exhibition chronicles Iceland’s eruption history since 1900 and sheds light on iconic volcanoes such as Hekla, Katla, and Eyjafjallajökull. Live earthquake monitors showcase the Iceland’s ongoing seismic activity, allowing visitors to experience earthquakes and geothermal phenomena.
