A word from Björg (Owner and Guide)
This series of trips are for people who enjoy good company, being outdoors, and sharing moments that matter. We are all about hiking in fresh Icelandic air, soaking in a hot spring, or simply talking late into the evening over a home-cooked meal. We’ll explore Iceland’s most famous sights, but also the hidden places that mean the most to us. The valleys, trails, and stories that live just off the map, those are our favorites that we look forward to sharing with you.
If you’re traveling with a partner or friends who like to experience things differently, that’s perfectly fine. We’re flexible, and Iceland has plenty to offer for every mood and energy level. All you need is curiosity and a love for life.
We’re looking for like-minded travelers. We hope to bring together people who want to connect, share stories, and enjoy the beauty of Iceland together. It’s not about ticking boxes. It’s about slowing down, having fun, and making memories in good company.
When we started Midgard Adventure back in 2010, we often invited guests into our own homes. We’d share coffee, a beer, or a slice of birthday cake and simply enjoy each other’s company. When we later built Midgard Base Camp, our gatherings naturally moved there, but we’ve always missed that personal connection. So for this special tour, we’re bringing it back. We’ll invite the group to our home once again, where Kalle, our brother-in-law and Midgard’s head chef, will prepare a meal that fits the moment and the people around the table.
Let’s meet before the trip
We’d love to chat with each of you before the tour. A short meeting or email helps us understand what you’re hoping to get out of the experience. Where possible, we’ll adapt the itinerary to suit your interests.
Send us an email at Adventure@Midgard.is. Björg or one of our travel experts will get your message.

DAY 1 - Iconic Golden Circle and Geothermal Adventures
Morning/Afternoon:
Meet in Reykjavik at 10:00 AM, where your guide will pick you up at your hotel or other preferred location.
We will start our adventure by exploring the legendary Golden Circle, visiting some of Iceland’s most iconic wonders:
Gullfoss Waterfall: Marvel at Iceland’s most famous waterfall, known for its impressive double cascade and stunning views.
Geysir Geothermal Area: Discover Iceland’s renowned hot spring area with boiling mud pots, hot springs, and erupting geysers. One of them, Strokkur, erupts every few minutes, shooting boiling water up to 20 meters high – an awe-inspiring sight!
Þingvellir National Park: Visit this UNESCO World Heritage site and walk Almannagjá, the impressive canyon between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Learn about the world’s first parliament, founded here in 930 AD.
For lunch, we visit Friðheimar, a unique farm famous for its sustainable greenhouse farming. Taste their delicious tomato-based dishes, all grown year-round using geothermal energy.
We also stop by a Geothermal Bakery to experience the magic of geothermal energy firsthand. We’ll make Icelandic bread using an old recipe, bury it in the warm ground to bake, then unearth it and taste the fresh bread. This is a unique Icelandic tradition!
Late Afternoon and Evening:
After arriving at Midgard Base Camp, we will have a short briefing to go over the upcoming adventures and details. Jón Gísli, one of our local guides, will have a short talk on the Icelandic Sagas.
Dinner: Enjoy a delicious meal at Midgard Restaurant. Great food in a casual, relaxed atmosphere is an essential part of traveling for us. We’re proud to share that Midgard Restaurant is rated number one on TripAdvisor for restaurants in South Iceland.
Northern Lights viewing: Unwind in the rooftop hot tub and sauna while waiting for the Northern Lights. The Midgard team will keep you updated on the forecast. You can even monitor the Northern Lights webcam from the comfort of your room.
We scout for the Northern Lights every night, either at or around Midgard Base Camp. If the forecast is better elsewhere (within a 1-1.5-hour drive), we will embark on a guided tour. Included in the itinerary is one Northern Lights Evening Tour to one of the landmarks in the area, often a black sand beach, mountain, waterfall or even on top of a glacier, all depending on conditions.
Accommodation: Spend the night at Midgard Base Camp, a cozy hotel and hostel style accommodation, with an adventure vibe.
DAY 2 - Stunning Katla Ice Caves and South Coast Wonders
Morning and Early Afternoon:
Enjoy our delicious Icelandic breakfast buffet at Midgard Restaurant.
Today, we head towards Vík to visit the dramatic and stunning Katla Ice Caves – a once-in-a-lifetime experience offering a rare glimpse into Iceland’s glacial beauty and dynamic volcanic landscape. – New Feature This Year!
Lunch: Your guide will take you to their favorite local restaurant along the South Coast.
We also visit Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, a must-see destination for its volcanic black sand, striking basalt columns, and powerful waves, offering an unforgettable glimpse into Iceland’s dramatic natural beauty.
If time allows, we will visit other South Coast sites before returning to Midgard Base Camp.
Late Afternoon and Evening:
Optional activity on your own: When you return from the tour we highly recommend you visit the LAVA centre, a world-class exhibition focused on volcanoes and earthquakes. It’s fun, educational, and just a short 10-minute walk from Midgard Base Camp.
After an adventurous day, we gather at Midgard Restaurant to share stories and enjoy a flavorful dinner prepared by our talented chefs.

DAY 3 - Off the Beaten Path Þórsmörk Super Jeep Adventure
Begin your day with a hearty Icelandic breakfast buffet at Midgard Restaurant, the perfect preparation for an adventure to a lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination that most travelers miss.
We are going to our favorite place, Þórsmörk Mountain Reserve, in our modified 4×4 Super Jeeps. To access this area you need to cross glacial rivers, so it’s not for the normal rental car.
Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) means the valley of Thor (the Norse god). We, Icelanders, sometimes say it is our ‘happy place‘. It’s got everything: volcanic landscapes, not one but three glaciers, fun glacier river crossings, and rich history (from folk, elves and trolls and all the way to Game of Thrones). The number of interesting places is abundant, both in Þórsmörk and on our way there. Depending on the group’s preferences, we will embark on short hikes to explore these hidden gems.
By visiting Þórsmörk, you get to explore landscapes that capture the essence of Iceland’s rugged interior. Interestingly, most travelers stick to the Ring Road along the coast and miss out on these breathtaking scenes that hold a special place in the hearts of Icelanders. Venturing into Þórsmörk is a unique, must-see experience that showcases the wild beauty of Iceland’s inland regions.
For lunch, we’ll enjoy delicious lunchboxes from Midgard Restaurant, savoring our meal amidst the stunning wilderness.
Late Afternoon and Evening:
- Optional activity on your own: Do like the locals do and visit the local swimming pool, just a 7-minute walk from Midgard. Relax in the warm outdoor pool, hot tubs, and sauna. After an adventurous day, we gather at Midgard Restaurant to share stories and enjoy a flavorful dinner prepared by our talented chefs.Northern Lights viewing: Oh, the beautiful Auroras! As always, the Midgard team will keep the group updated on the Northern Lights forecast for the night.Accommodation: Your bed at Midgard Base Camp awaits, promising a peaceful and restful night’s sleep in the quiet countryside.
DAY 4 - Local Day
Morning and Afternoon:
Begin your day with a hearty Icelandic breakfast buffet at Midgard Restaurant, the perfect preparation for an adventure to a local treat, destination that most travelers miss.
We would love to show you our local places, where we go on a normal day when we are not enjoying Þórsmörk.
The area we will visit is in and around Fljótshlíð, the “hill by the river”, highly affected and formed by the river Markarfljót. A beautiful and peaceful area where a lot of the Icelandic Saga’s happened.
Among the places we may explore are:
-
- The small canyons and one of our favorite playgrounds underneath Mt. Þórólfsfell.
- The small mountain Stóri Dímon where we may hike 120 meters to the top to witness the fantastic view or walk around to seek unexpected beauty and adventures.
- We might take you to one of our own “go to areas” around Mt Þríhyrningur, where there is a lot to explore, rivers to cross, hidden waterfalls and caves to enjoy.
We love to end the day by visiting a secret place in one of our few forests in Iceland, and taking a sip from an old well, by a farm where the farmers became 100 years old. Drinking from the well is our way of staying young and may become yours too
Late Afternoon/Evening:
Visit to an Icelandic home: Experience Icelandic hospitality in a cozy, authentic setting – a truly local experience only offered by Midgard.
Dinner: We will serve the renowned traditional Icelandic lamb. The sheep roam free in the highlands, grazing on wild herbs, grass, and berries, giving the meat its distinct, rich flavor. Of course, we will also have delicious vegan and vegetarian options available to accommodate all dietary preferences.
Northern Lights viewing: Oh, the beautiful Auroras! As always, the Midgard team will keep the group updated on the Northern Lights forecast for the night.
Accommodation: Your bed at Midgard Base Camp awaits, promising a peaceful and restful night’s sleep in the quiet countryside.
DAY 5 - Glacier Ice-Walk, Glacier Lagoon and Stunning Waterfalls
Morning and Early Afternoon:
After a filling breakfast at Midgard Base Camp, get ready for your final adventure.
Today, we are going on a glacier adventure at Sólheimajökull Glacier. We will embark on a glacier ice walk, which is a unique experience allowing you to explore the glacier’s stunning ice formations, deep crevasses, and striking blue ice up close. Your professional Midgard guide will provide insights into the glacier’s formation, the impact of volcanic activity, and the effects of climate change. No prior experience is necessary; our guide will conduct a safety briefing to ensure everyone’s well-being.
One of the highlights of visiting Sólheimajökull is its glacier lagoon, a serene body of water at the base of the glacier, which offers impressive views of the glacier’s edge and the surrounding landscape. The lagoon’s tranquil waters reflect the glacier’s beauty, providing a unique perspective on this natural wonder. It’s a perfect spot for photography and a quiet moment of reflection.
We also visit two of the most famous South Coast waterfalls: Skógafoss, known for its 60-meter drop and misty rainbows, and Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the waterfall for a breathtaking view from within a natural grotto. Please note, sometimes it’s not safe do go behind the waterfall. Your guide will assess if it’s safe to walk behind the waterfall during your visit. We’ll also explore the hidden gem, Gljúfrabúi Waterfall, a lesser-known but equally stunning cascade.
Late afternoon:
At the end of the day, we take you to Reykjavík. As we return, you’ll have time to reflect on the unforgettable experiences and lasting memories from our adventure. The expected arrival in Reykjavik is late afternoon.
If you wish to extend your stay, we’re here to help with any additional accommodation bookings or travel plans in Iceland.
